Pien Tze Huang's Global Journey: Connecting Traditional Chinese Medicine with the World

Sep 20, 2026

Zhangzhou, China, September 20, 2026 -- On September 17, the 23rd China-ASEAN Expo opened in Nanning, Guangxi. Invited to exhibit at the expo, Pien Tze Huang presented a wide-ranging health and wellness portfolio and highlighted the heritage behind its traditional craftsmanship.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an important part of China’s cultural heritage, serving as a bridge for exchange among civilizations. Its reach now extends to 196 countries and regions. TCM has also become an important area of cooperation between China and ASEAN, the European Union and the African Union, as well as within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS.

As TCM continues to expand globally, Pien Tze Huang, a traditional medicinal product originating in Zhangzhou, Fujian, has travelled along the historic routes of the Maritime Silk Road. From the luggage of overseas Chinese migrants to retail shelves abroad, and from word-of-mouth recognition within local communities to wider cross-cultural engagement, its journey illustrates the growing global reach of Chinese herbs.

Along the Maritime Silk Road: A Medicine Carried by Overseas Chinese

Pien Tze Huang traces its origins to the Jiajing reign (1522–1566) of the Ming dynasty. Its traditional production technique is included in China’s national intangible cultural heritage list, while its formula and manufacturing process are protected under China’s state secrecy framework.

In the modern era, large numbers of people from southern Fujian left their hometowns for Southeast Asia in search of a livelihood. Living and working in the region’s hot and humid climate, they often faced illness and work-related injuries. Pien Tze Huang was among the traditional remedies they carried with them from home and gradually became familiar within overseas Chinese communities.

Its reputation within overseas Chinese communities helped Pien Tze Huang establish an early foothold in Southeast Asia, marking the beginning of its international journey along the Maritime Silk Road. Beyond the circulation of the medicine itself, overseas Chinese also brought TCM approaches to disease prevention and treatment, along with traditional health and wellness practices to Southeast Asia. This small pill became a link to home and part of the broader spread of TCM across Southeast Asia.

From Chinese Communities to Southeast Asian Retail Shelves

Fujian was an important starting point and one of the birthplaces of the ancient Maritime Silk Road. Today, it is also a core area of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road and plays an important role in Belt and Road cooperation, providing favorable conditions for Pien Tze Huang’s international expansion.

In recent years, Pien Tze Huang has conducted research with institutions in China and abroad, with related findings published in international journals. These studies have provided scientific insights into the value of TCM. Based on its core pharmaceutical business, the company has also expanded into health foods, products made with ingredients traditionally used as both food and medicine, and personal care products. Together, these offerings form a wide-ranging health and wellness portfolio, providing a diverse product base for the company’s international expansion. As part of its overseas expansion, Pien Tze Huang has worked to meet local pharmaceutical regulatory requirements across Southeast Asia, obtaining drug registrations in Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries. It has also appointed a new distributor in Canada and completed initial product exports to the Canadian market. In parallel, it is advancing registration procedures for additional product lines in Thailand, Vietnam and other markets.

Fu An Tang, a century-old TCM pharmacy in Bangkok’s Chinatown, was founded by Yang Youzheng, whose ancestral home is Zhangzhou, Fujian. The pharmacy has served as an authorized distributor of Pien Tze Huang since 1983.

“Over the years, Pien Tze Huang has gained growing recognition among Thai consumers,” said Yang Baojun, manager of Fu An Tang’s international business division.Today, Pien Tze Huang has 22 dedicated retail counters across Thailand, Hong Kong and Macao, expanding its reach from Chinese communities to a broader local consumer base.

Beyond brick-and-mortar pharmacies and overseas Chinese distributors, Pien Tze Huang is also leveraging Fujian’s cross-border e-commerce strengths to expand its online presence in international markets. Fujian Minjing Industry, a local cross-border e-commerce company, has partnered with Pien Tze Huang to promote its cosmetics on TikTok and jointly develop markets across Southeast Asia.

“There is still significant growth potential for Pien Tze Huang in Southeast Asia,” said Guo Wanquan, general manager of Fujian Minjing Industry. “By expanding overseas, we aim to bring Pien Tze Huang’s quality products to consumers across Southeast Asia more quickly.”

Looking Ahead: The Next Phase of Global Growth

Traditional Chinese Medicine has its roots in China and reaches far beyond national borders.

In July 2026, Chinese authorities issued the Plan for the Revitalization and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine during the 15th Five-Year Plan Period (2026–2030). The plan calls for stronger mechanisms for the preservation and innovative development of TCM, faster modernization, and a broader international reach. Pien Tze Huang was selected for the first batch of China’s Top Consumer Brands “Historical Classics” list released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China. For years, it has ranked among China’s leading individual proprietary Chinese medicine products by export earnings.

Beyond product exports, the company has also sought to build international visibility through brand communication and cultural exchange. In September 2025, the brand appeared on a digital billboard in New York’s Times Square, presenting TCM heritage to an international audience. It has also participated in international exchange events, including the Kuliang Forum, the 2025 China-Central Asia Media Cooperation Forum and the 2025 Eurasia Commodity and Trade Expo. Through these multilateral platforms, it has introduced Chinese perspectives on health and wellbeing to the world.

A single medicine brings together the heritage of a nationally recognized traditional production technique, memories of the Maritime Silk Road, and the modernization and international expansion of China’s TCM health and wellness industry. Moving beyond simply entering overseas markets, Pien Tze Huang is working to build deeper local connections, share the story of TCM with international audiences, and contribute to broader global health cooperation.

'The Poor Traveler' duo Yosh Dimen and Vins Carlos say planning ahead is key to affordable trips

In this economy, as many Gen Z flyers would say, traveling is becoming more expensive by the day. Amid the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran in the Middle East, fuel prices are once again on the rise, adding to the growing costs of travel. The negative effects of this conflict hit the Philippine economy hard. In an announcement, airfare is bound to increase when the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) decided to hike fuel surcharge from September 16 to 30, 2026 to Level 14 from Level 13 in the first half of the month. Under Level 14, passenger surcharges range from P457 to P1,336 for domestic flights, and from P1,509.08 to P11,220.71 for international flights. Spending for our dream travel destination is becoming a luxury and out of grasp from many Filipinos. That is why Yosh Dimen and Vins Carlos, the founders of The Poor Traveler emphasized that 'planning is the key' in keeping your travel costs down. The Poor Traveler is a multi-platform guide for people needing a travel itinerary or wanting some helpful tips for their travel. In a sit-down interview with Yosh and Vins at the 'Travel Tales: The Poor Traveler' event at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay in partnership with travel gear seller World Traveller, they shared some important reminders about saving money in your travel. Vins told GMANetwork.com that traveling should be "intentional" and it should be planned ahead. “Ako siguro kailangan intentional. For example, naka-book ka ng murang fair for how many days. “For example, four days, so you really have to research, number one talaga sinasabi namin madalas. Research about the destination and then plan it kung ano ba 'yung tina-target mo on a daily basis." He continued, “Pero consider din na parang you don't have to do it na parang ang dami-dami n'yo dapat kailangan puntahan in one day. Sisiksikin ninyo, kasi ang na-learn din namin in the past 16 years is kailangan ano ka rin in the moment. “Pag andun ka sa isang lugar take time para magmasid, umupo, i-enjoy. Hindi 'yung parang, 'Ay hindi, nakapag-picture na ako, gora na.'” RELATED CONTENT: Travel content creators you should follow now! A well-planned trip according to Vins is essential in getting the information you need for cheaper fare or food options. “Find the balance rin na makakapag-relax kayo in every stop. Tapos, lahat intentional kailangan planado n'yo kung magkano 'yung pamasahe. Ano 'yung next stop na malapit dito, 'tapos saan mura puwede kumain na affordable 'tapos masarap. “Treat din na time is also a currency, so, parang kailangan at the back of your mind palaging kino-consider 'yung time. Bawal may masayang na oras, kasi 'pag may nasayang na oras- for example, masyado kang nag-enjoy o natrapik ka may na-cancel na something na tour. Tapos nandun ka na sayang naman 'yung [punta], dapat learn to adjust din. Learn to be flexible.” Photo source: GMANetwork.com Looking back on their journey building The Poor Traveler, Yosh Dimen felt that traveling has really become too expensive, compared to their trips a few years ago. He pointed out that their previous Europe trip amounted to Php 230,000 in two months, but their recent travel in Europe cost them more than Php 300,000---- and here's the catch: that amount was only good for a month of traveling. Yosh recalled, “Siyempre wala kaming data to back it up. Pero in terms of like anecdotal, personal experience ito talaga 'yung pinakamahal. Kasi, I remember ten years ago parang kahit mag-Europe, nakakapag-Europe kami na two hundred thirty thousand in two months na 'yun with air fare na 'yun and hotel. Pero 'yung last Europe namin parang nag-more than three hundred thousand kami one month lang 'yun. So, tama si Vins e you need to be more intentional. “Kasi, we can see na mas hindi na ganun ka-frequent 'yung mga travel, kasi siyempre 'di ba mas mahal na siya. So, mas kokonti 'yung number of trips, pero make it count!” Despite the steep cost of traveling, we Filipinos are still lucky that we can have the option to visit destinations within the country or in Southeast Asia that are worth exploring. “Ang maganda naman we live in a country or in a region, in Southeast Asia in general na kahit saan ka pumunta, may maganda kang mapupuntuhan.” Now marking their 16th year as travel content creators, Yosh Dimen describes their journey over the past decade and a half as a roller-coaster ride—one filled with challenges, opportunities, and constant growth. Throughout the years, they have learned to adapt to the changing times and evolving landscape of content creation, allowing them to stay relevant while continuing to connect with their audience. “It's a roller coaster to say the least. “Kasi, sixteen years ang daming puwede mangyari. Naranasan namin 'yung rise ng Instagram, kasi nag-start kami travel vlog, 'di ba website, so written lang siya. 'Tapos, nagkaroon ng Instagram era, nagkaroon ng YouTube era. Nagka-pandemic and ngayon AI era, parang each of those eras na 'yun may pino-post siyang challenge e,” Yosh said to GMANetwork.com. “So, ang maipagmamalaki din namin tina-try namin mag-adapt sa kung ano man 'yung situation, kung anong'era 'yung darating. Talagang gumagawa kami ng paraan to be useful pa rin and relevant sa time.” Check out the moments you've missed at the 'Travel Tales: The Poor Traveler' event held last September 19 in this gallery:
