An audience exceeding 250 gathered at Chiang Mai’s Gathering International Church for RAY: The Movie. The Thailand event forms part of an international run of screenings whose ticket receipts and merchandise auction proceeds are being donated directly to displaced people and emergency relief networks in Myanmar.

Myanmar diaspora members and Thai film enthusiasts were among those attending. The showing followed the film’s Oct. 3 North American premiere in New York City by one day.

The film recounts actress and former beauty queen Htar Htet Htet’s experiences after Myanmar’s military coup in 2021. Its basis is UNSHAKABLE (Ma Yai Lae Tan), a non-fiction novel by Khat Zaw. Htar Htet Htet, Daung (Thura Aung) and Min Maw Kunn are among the cast.

Daung and Khat Zaw attended in person, while director The Khit Nay and Htar Htet Htet addressed viewers by video from their political exile in Australia. The director said the story reflected the experiences of others in the revolutionary struggle. Khat Zaw described it as a historical record of sacrifices and ties between generations, rather than propaganda.

Sydney hosted the official premiere on June 27. Subsequent showings have taken place in Japan, Singapore and South Korea, with more scheduled for October, November and into January.
