Malaysia will assess whether electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) and age checks should be extended to online gaming services, including Roblox, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said on October 19.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Fahmi said discussions with Roblox had indicated its willingness to cooperate. Verifying users’ identities and ages remained an issue to examine, he said. The government’s assessment would cover concerns about children using the services and potential abuse by extremist, radical and terrorist groups.

Fahmi said government bodies, including the National Security Council, continually monitor platforms for possible misuse by such groups. Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission would act if necessary, including taking prompt measures when required.

Separately, Fahmi said he planned to discuss social media age restrictions with his Indonesian counterpart during a visit to Indonesia. His itinerary included the World Conference on Creative Economy 2026 and meetings with ministers overseeing communications, digital matters and culture.

He said the talks would examine challenges in dealing with social media providers, taking account of similarities and differences between the two countries’ regulatory frameworks.
