Malaysia’s cinema exhibitors have backed a measure removing entertainment duty on screenings of local films and theatrical performances in the Federal Territories, effective January 1, 2027. The Malaysian Association of Film Exhibitors (MAFE) expressed its support in a statement on October 13.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the exemption on October 9 while presenting Budget 2027. MAFE said the measure would benefit the country’s creative industries and help strengthen the ecosystem for Malaysian films.

The association also supported Anwar’s call for all states to introduce similar exemptions. It said it would approach state governments to encourage adoption throughout Malaysia and collaborate with the Ministry of Communications and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) on implementation.

MAFE represents major cinema operators and theatre chains nationwide. Also known as Persatuan Pemamer Filem Malaysia, it said it remained committed to promoting Malaysian content and supporting the film industry’s growth.
