Composer Datuk Wah Idris hopes Malaysian authorities will formally recognise Standing in the Eyes of the World as a special national song, saying the track popularised by Ella can represent the country internationally.

Speaking to Bernama, the 69-year-old said he wanted the song to feature regularly at state functions and government ceremonies. In his view, its appeal crosses differences in background and gives Malaysians a shared sense of pride.

Wah said he composed the piece to present Malaysia to an international audience during the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Rather than focus solely on sport, he chose lyrics with a universal message intended to build listeners' confidence. He regards its continuing popularity beyond the Games as evidence that it can resonate across generations.

In 2020, the United States Embassy in Malaysia chose a reimagined version of the song for its July 4 American Independence Day celebration.
